Tired all the time and over 40? What really counts, and when to see the GP
A slump at the end of the day, less appetite for going out, the feeling of not being quite yourself. This guide separates what rests on solid ground from what is marketing.

The short version: no supplement replaces sleep, exercise and food. For some nutrients (zinc, folate, vitamin D, selenium) there are authorised health claims in the EU. For other trendy ingredients (maca, ginseng, cordyceps) there are none. And if the tiredness hangs around, the place to go is your GP, not a shopping site.
Tired all the time after 40: what are we talking about?
"Vitality" is not a medical term. In real life it means energy through the day, stamina, concentration and a decent mood. Almost always it is the sum of everyday things: a long commute, a packed diary, the school run, stress, sleep, drink, and sometimes a medication or a health issue nobody has spotted yet. Be wary of any product that promises "potency" or "virility" and nothing more: those are advertising words, not authorised claims.
What weighs most (and does not fit in a capsule)
- Sleep. Too little or poor sleep drags down your energy and concentration the next day.
- Physical activity. The WHO recommends adults do 150 to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (WHO: physical activity). Cycling to work or a brisk walk at lunch counts, and so does training with the club.
- Food and drink. A varied diet covers most of your vitamin and mineral needs. The pints at the weekend count too.
- Stress. Long-running stress drains both energy and sleep.
- The dark months. We get little sun from autumn into spring, which is why vitamin D is a regular topic at the pharmacy counter. Ask your pharmacist or GP what suits you.

When to see the doctor
If the tiredness lasts several weeks, comes with other symptoms, or you notice changes that worry you, make an appointment with your GP. Possible causes include the thyroid, anaemia, sleep apnoea or the effects of a medicine, among others. A food supplement will not change any of that.

In the EU, a food supplement can only be marketed with authorised health claims (see the EU register). A few examples linked to energy and vitality:
| Nutrient | Authorised claim (summary) |
|---|---|
| Folate | Contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. |
| Zinc | Contributes to the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood, to normal cognitive function and to the normal function of the immune system. |
| Vitamin D | Contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function and to the normal function of the immune system. |
| Selenium | Contributes to normal spermatogenesis and to the normal function of the immune system. |
Maca, ginseng, cordyceps, L-arginine: what can be said
These are common ingredients in this type of product. No health claim is authorised for them on energy, stamina or performance. There are studies, in various settings, with mixed results, using very different extracts and doses, and their conclusions do not carry over to just any product. When an ad presents them as a guaranteed fix, that is your cue to pause.

What to look at when choosing
- The full ingredient list with the dose per capsule. Without amounts you cannot compare anything.
- An identifiable company: a registered name, address and real contact details.
- Claims within the law. Be wary of "potency", "virility" and "boosts testosterone".
- Clear guarantee terms: the length and who pays for the return.
- The view of your GP or pharmacist if you take medication.
