VapoCept vs. Prevagen (and Neuriva): What's Actually Different, Side by Side
Prevagen and Neuriva are the names most people already know when they start looking for a memory supplement, which is exactly why "VapoCept vs. Prevagen" is a fair question to ask before buying any of them. Here is the comparison, using the same four criteria we use for every product: mechanism versus the science, dose transparency, guarantee terms and public complaints. You can find the product overview on our page for the VapoCept memory supplement.
How we are comparing them
Per our methodology, we compare: (1) does the mechanism match what research actually shows, (2) is the dose disclosed and does it match the research cited, (3) what are the real (not headline) guarantee terms, and (4) what public complaints or regulatory history exist. Note that we earn a commission only if you buy VapoCept through our link, not on the other two, which is a conflict of interest worth keeping in mind as you read.

1. Mechanism
Prevagen's core ingredient is apoaequorin, a protein originally derived from jellyfish. The claim is that it supports brain function. The concern raised publicly by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and examined by the FTC is more basic than "does it work": apoaequorin is a protein, and proteins are broken down by digestion before they can reach the bloodstream intact, which raises the question of how it would reach the brain at all.
Neuriva Original lists coffee fruit extract and phosphatidylserine. The manufacturer promotes the coffee fruit extract as raising BDNF, a protein involved in connections between brain cells. The evidence for these ingredients in healthy adults is limited and often comes from small studies.
VapoCept's ingredients (L-Arginine, L-Citrulline, Niacin) are nitric oxide precursors. Nitric oxide is what helps blood vessels open, and researchers have measured a real decline in nitric oxide production with age (PubMed 26442881, PubMed 11340318). This is a blood flow mechanism, not a digested-protein mechanism.
On this point: VapoCept's mechanism is easier to explain without the "how does it survive digestion" problem that Prevagen has publicly faced. That does not prove VapoCept works better in practice; it means the mechanism is more plausible on paper. We explain each of its nutrients in our guide to L-Arginine, Citrulline and Niacin for brain health.
2. Dose transparency
None of the three makes it simple to independently verify that the dose used matches the dose used in the research each brand points to. This is a shared weak point, not an advantage for any side. For VapoCept, check the supplement facts panel and compare it with the studies linked above.
3. Guarantee terms
- VapoCept: 60-day guarantee, but 30 days of use required first, and you pay return shipping. Full detail on our is VapoCept a scam page.
- Prevagen and Neuriva: guarantee terms vary by retailer and have changed over time; check current terms directly before buying.
4. Public complaints and regulatory history
Prevagen has the more extensive public record. The FTC and the New York Attorney General sued its maker in 2017 over whether the evidence supported its memory-improvement advertising, and a federal court order entered in December 2024 bars certain memory and cognition claims (FTC statement). Neuriva's maker has faced consumer class actions alleging its "clinically proven" brain-performance marketing was not backed by evidence, including a settlement that was later vacated on appeal. VapoCept, as a newer and smaller product, does not have a comparable regulatory record, which can mean fewer red flags or simply less scrutiny so far. It does have its own issues: fake celebrity ads using its name and mostly negative Trustpilot feedback (see VapoCept complaints).

Price comparison
VapoCept: according to the seller, $79 per bottle at 2 bottles, $69 at 3 and $49 at 6, plus shipping, which works out to about $1.63 per day at the 6-bottle size. Prevagen and Neuriva: pricing varies significantly by retailer, bottle size and sales, so check current pricing where you are buying them. Per-day cost is the fairest comparison because bottle sizes differ.
VapoCept vs Focus Factor and other "brain formulas"
Focus Factor and similar products lean on a long list of vitamins plus herbs and compounds such as bacopa, phosphatidylserine and DMAE. That broad "kitchen sink" approach is the opposite of VapoCept's short list. A shorter list is easier to evaluate, but a long list is not automatically better or worse. Judge each by whether you can read the label and match the ingredients to credible research.
So which one is "better"?
Neither is a cure, and none should be marketed as one. Be suspicious of any page for any of these products that claims to "reverse" or "treat" memory loss. Based on mechanism alone, VapoCept's blood flow approach avoids the specific digestion problem raised about Prevagen's core ingredient. Based on public track record, Prevagen and Neuriva have more scrutiny on the record, which cuts both ways. Based on evidence, none has a strong trial showing it improves memory in healthy older adults, which is why we also publish a plain guide to the best supplements for memory over 50.

Is VapoCept better than Prevagen?
They use different mechanisms. VapoCept targets blood flow through nitric oxide precursors, while Prevagen uses a protein that has faced questions about reaching the brain. Neither is proven to improve memory in healthy older adults.
How is VapoCept different from Neuriva?
Neuriva Original lists coffee fruit extract and phosphatidylserine, while VapoCept lists L-Arginine, L-Citrulline, Niacin and Beta-Alanine. Neuriva is sold at retailers; VapoCept is sold through the official order page.
What happened with Prevagen and the FTC?
The FTC and New York Attorney General sued Prevagen's maker in 2017, and a December 2024 court order bars the maker from making certain memory and cognition claims, according to the FTC.
Which memory supplement has the best evidence?
No memory supplement has been proven to prevent cognitive decline. A daily multivitamin has recent trial support for memory in older adults, and lifestyle habits have better evidence than any brand.
